World most sacred mountain stands in a remote corner of western
Tibet, isolated by rugged terrain from all but a handful of outsiders.
Its name is Mounatain Kailash. To pilgrims of four religions this
(6714M.) 22,028 foot rock pyaramid is the throne of the gods and
the ‘Nevel of the Earth’, a place where the divine
takes earthly form. The lake and mountain are the crowing jewels
of a magical land of pure light and intense colour born in the
rarefied atmoshphere of 15000 feet.
To each pilgrim Kailash speaks differently.Hindus cross the frozen
mountain passes of India to circle the peak that is Shiva’s
throne and bath in the lake crated from the mind-Manas of Brahma.
Buddhists journey from Bhutan, Nepal and every corner of Tibet
to this holiest of mountains they call Kang Rinponche, the “Precious
Snow Mountains”. The Jain religion knows Kailash as Mount
Ashtapada, Atop the summit, its founder, Rishabhnatha, gained
spiritual liberation. And to the Bonpo, the followers of Tibets
old Pre-Buddhist beliefs, it is the “Nine-Storey
Swastika Mountain” the mystic ‘soul’
of the entire region.
Hindu, Buddhist , Jain and Bonpo, each holds different belief, each
sees different gods, but the underlying reality is the same The
Ramayana says : There is no mountain like Himalaya, for in it are
Kailash and Mansarovar. As the dew is dried up by the morning
sun, so are the sins of mankind by the sight of Himalaya. The
Indus, the Sutlej, the Brahmaputra and the Karnali all had their
sources in the small corner of Western Tibet Ganga’s fall
from heaven, and divides into four great rivers which water the
four quarter of the earth.
